Nicole Hogstrand is a Swedish cellist and composer residing in Copenhagen since 2009. Here she is a dedicated member of the new music and experimental music scene where she maintains a practice grounded in artistic integrity, collaboration, and explorations of alternative creative structures. Her work engages deeply with notions of authenticity, collective process, and the relational aspects of sound. These concerns manifest through her ongoing involvement with her ensembles Halvcirkel, Damkapellet, Hydrus Consort, and Crush String Collective.
Hogstrand’s music is distinguished by its attentiveness to tone, nuance, and atmosphere. Drawing from a vivid array of musical vocabularies, she explores the harmonic textures of sound that frame listening as a dynamic and generative form of participation. Through a focus on micro-gesture and timbral sensitivity, she cultivates spaces where the intimate and the human are foregrounded. Her recorded works for ensembles have been released on FatCat Records/130701 (Clarice Jensen, Shida Shahabi, Keely Forsyth), Dacapo Records (Else Marie Pade, Bára Gísladóttir, Hans Abrahamsen), År & Dag (Anders Lauge Meldgaard, Copenhagen Clarinet Choir), and Barkhousen Recordings.
Hogstrand studied the Royal Danish Academy of Music and Bienen School of Music, Northwestern University, Illinois, where she acquired a masters in cello performance. Her self-taught practice on the Viola da Gamba is reflecting a broader curiosity toward historical and alternative sonic frameworks.
Her practice as both performer and improviser extends across disciplines and her expansive interest have led to countless collaborations and appearances with a wide range of artists including Terry Riley, Ellen Arkbro, Josiah Steinbrick, Ellen Fullman, Theresa Wong, Jason Dungan/Blue Lake, Clarissa Connelly, Anton Friisgaard, Valgeir Sigurdsson, Sofie Birch, and many others.
Hogstrand’s ensemble work has been recognized with several Danish Music Awards, Reumert and Ekko Shortlist nominations, and support from Den Unge Kunstneriske Elite. In 2021, she and Damkapellet received the Carl Nielsen and Anne-Marie Carl Nielsen Talent Prize for composition.
In addition to her artistic activities, Hogstrand is a certified coach through Karin Boucher’s The Big Picture, integrating reflective and process-oriented methodologies into her artistic and collaborative practice.
